Polyethylene terephthalate is a polymer used mainly to produce food-safe packaging such as bottles (above), as well as highly durable textile fibers. It has many names, but it is generally referred to as “PET” (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) for short.

Ferrovial Services is in charge of managing, operating and maintaining the new PET flake recycling plant in Les Franqueses del Vallès, Barcelona. Occupying 18,000 m2, it is one of the largest plants of its type in Europe: it can process approximately 50,000 tons of recovered PET per year. The plant produces recycled PET plastic flake from packaging recovered in waste treatment plants and from source-sorted waste, mainly from Spain, Portugal and southern France.

The facility can handle the waste produced each year by 5 million people, triple the population of Barcelona. The new plant was designed specifically to produce PET flake that conforms to the highest quality standards, providing full guarantees of its reusability. The flake has been certified by the European Food Safety Authority as suitable for reuse in food packaging, which closes the circle in this plastic’s life cycle.

The project uses the latest technology in order to ensure that the industrial processes minimizes energy use and promotes water reuse. The plant contributes to achieving the packaging recovery goals set by the European Commission in the European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy, under which, by 2025, 25% of plastic used in producing new plastic packaging should be obtained through recycling.
