Fidel López Soria, CEO of Ferrovial Services, describes his vision of the circular economy, the main operations and contracts in this area and the use of technology to improve production processes. “The circular economy is a core component of our business model. Society is moving inexorably from a ‘produce, use and dispose’ model towards a ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ approach,” said Fidel López.
“The pandemic has shown once again that waste treatment is a vital, essential service in any situation. We still face a major challenge: the percentage of municipal waste that is recycled and recovered must reach 50% this year, 2020, and rise to 65% by 2035,”
Some of Ferrovial Services’ main environmental projects include a PET flake recycling plant and a plant for mechanical treatment of pharmaceutical waste coupled with an energy-from-waste unit. Also Spain’s only plant for upgrading waste-produced biogas to renewable natural gas, and an energy-from-waste plant in North Yorkshire (UK), which can treat 320,000 tons of waste and produce 200,000 MWh of electricity per year.
