Energy efficiency means obtaining goods and services with the least possible energy consumption while achieving the same or a better degree of comfort, polluting less, extending resources’ useful lives, and lowering operating costs. Based on that definition, energy efficiency initiatives seek to achieve the highest possible performance with the least consumption of energy.
Energy efficiency is a lever for the sustainable development of society, in both the environmental and economic dimensions, since efficient energy management greatly reduces the environmental impact of businesses, governments and citizens while contributing to the long-term economic viability of society as a whole.

Energy efficiency projects
Energy Control Center
The Center is a collaborative workspace centralizing energy management and know-how in relation to energy efficiency services. The Center manages many types of contracts: from hospitals and elderly care homes, schools, sports centers, offices and processing plants, to district heating and power plants. This solution uses telemetry to manage more than 4,000 supply points and 2,500 devices in Spain, the United States and Portugal, analyzing 316 gigawatt-hours of energy consumption.
IoT (Internet of Things)
Ferrovial Services also has a platform — called XPERiot — for individual and aggregate remote management of each light in a street lighting system, for controlling operating schedules, regulating lighting levels and monitoring their operating parameters. This solution helps achieve further progress towards the intelligent use of data analysis and digitalization in order to enhance operating efficiency.
The district heating project in San Sebastián (Spain) uses centralized heat production from biomass to meet the demand for heating and air conditioning of around 1,500 homes in the city’s Txomin Enea district. By using biomass, this project cuts CO2 emissions by a total of 1,800 tons per year. This initiative also saves costs for operator and end user alike.
Geotermabok: Geothermal energy from landfills
The GEOTERMABOK project is a proof-of-concept for the use of geothermal energy systems, normally applied to the ground, in order to extract the heat generated in a landfill. The project also analyses potential uses of the heat, such as powering processes in the landfill itself (e.g. leachate processing) and external applications.
Energy efficiency services for hospitals
Ferrovial Services delivers energy services at many hospitals throughout Spain. Particularly noteworthy is the Smart Hospital project at the Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander. The new in-patient building combines maximum efficiency in its installations with rationalized execution costs. Additionally, energy consumption at the existing facilities was cut by 12%. The experience accumulated by the Center of Excellence for Infrastructure made it possible to optimize the lighting upgrade and improve the facility’s costs by 10%, all while fulfilling the established plan. Among the hospitals in the Madrid region, Móstoles Hospital underwent sweeping upgrades to the principal energy-consuming equipment in the main building and in outlying clinics. The project also includes management of heating and air conditioning, cooling, climate control, lighting, facilities control and vertical transport equipment. These actions will together save more than 1.5 GWh in electricity and 0.3 GWh in thermal energy, reducing CO2 emissions by 600 tons per year.
In Tomar (Portugal), we developed a project that included installing a new smart, connected street lighting system comprising 14,000 lights, and the implementation of four pilot projects: monitoring the use of fire hydrants, air and water quality monitoring, tracking flood levels in the Nabão river, and implementing artificial intelligence software to manage the entire system. This software will use a LoRaWAN communications network to manage all communications, based on the Internet of Things (IoT).
